Wyclef Jean is not taking the allegations made against his Yele Haiti Foundation lightly.

After The New York Post questioned his charity’s use of donations, the singer fired back explaining that his Yele Haiti Charity rebuilt an orphanage and set up a system of outdoor toilet and shower facilities in one of the largest shanties in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

As mentioned on MSDTV, The New York Post had published a report on Sunday claiming his foundation collected $16 million in 2010 but that less than a third of the money went to Haitian emergency efforts. The Post also says $1 million was paid to a Florida firm that doesn’t have established documentation.

Jean founded his Yele Haiti charity in 2005. In 2008, the Post reported that it had never filed a required tax form and in 2009, according to the Post, the foundation mysteriously lost $244,000.

Wyclef Jean is again being questioned about his Yele charity and it’s relief efforts. The singer/musician was on the forefront of the the charitable initiatives for Haiti’s earthquake aftermath, but now  reports are coming in that than Wyclef allegedly squandered off relief effort funds — on himself.

The New York Post reports that only a fraction of the $16 million collected in the name of Haitian relief efforts has been given to the country’s recovery.

Jean’s charity, Yele Haiti, also gave out several questionable contracts, one of which ($1 million) was paid to a Florida firm that doesn’t even exist.

The New York Post also reports that a company called P&A Construction – which is run by Warnel Pierre, Jean’s brother-in-law — received $353,983 from the group.

Sadly this isn’t the first time his organization, founded in 2005 with cousin Jerry Duplessis, has been in trouble. In 2008, reports emerged that proper tax documents were not filed for the foundation.

Then in 2009 the charity somehow lost $244,000. After the earthquake hit, Jean went to Twitter asking for $5 donations from his followers. Shortly thereafter Yele Haiti made a donation to a TV station run by Jean and his cousin.

In a 2010 press conference, the singer strongly defended his charity saying, “Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not. Yele’s books are open and transparent.”

It seems like someone needs to do some major fact-check on Clef. Of course, MSDTV will keep you posted.
