It’s hard to believe 35 years have passed since the epic saga of American slavery, “Roots” premiered in 1977. The groundbreaking mini-series riveted families to their seats regardless of race. Now, OWN Chairman Oprah Winfrey has reunited the cast for the special “Roots 35 Years Later” at her home in Montecito, Calif.

 

“‘Roots’ forever changed television,” according to an OWN press release. “For the first time, TV viewers white and black experienced a part of American history through the eyes of slaves. For many it marked an awakening … and for the participating actors and actresses, it was nothing short of a spiritual experience.”

 

The original cast included Cicely Tyson, LeVar Burton, Leslie Uggams, John Amos, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Ben Vereen.

 

The special which will include interviews and clips airs on Jan. 16, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
