Rihanna Hits Platinum Status After Album Leaks, Billboard Says Not So Fast

Rihanna may need to slow down her “Anti” celebration party.

After Tidal “accidentally” released her album online, and then compensated the leak as an intentional free download, the album went viral and hit the platinum mark after one day.

Unfortuantely, Billboard is calling foul on “Anti’s” certified platinum status – saying it doesn’t quite work that way…

Last week, Tidal admited ‘Anti’ was released in error. As part of a $25 million deal with Samsung “Anti” became available as a free download on Tidal this week.

Tidal’s director of marketing tells Spin,

“Look, we know what happened here, in the sense that unfortunately we still rely on systems, and there was a system error. But I don’t think it hurt it at all.”

Looks like Tidal got it wrong.

While the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified Rihanna’s new album ‘Anti’ with Platinum status just one day after its release, Billboard says it’s not platinum according to their recordds.

A Billboard spokesperson told Digital Trends,

“Billboard has a well documented policy of not counting free albums towards the charts.”

“Anti” is now available on iTunes and physical copies go on sale Feb 5th.

Stay Tuned.
