Mary J. Blige has been receiving some Kentucky state backlash and it has nothing to do with chicken. The Queen of Soul was asked to sing the National Anthem at this years Kentucky Derby but ever since the announcement was made on Monday (April 23) people have been flooding the telephone lines at a local TV station insisting Mary was a poor choice.
WHAS 11 in Kentucky claims they’ve received dozens of calls and emails fearing Mary J. Blige might give too much soul to The National Anthem.
The Director of Communications and Media Services at Churchill Downs blew off the complaints in a statement to the media explaining:
“We’ve hosted the Derby for 137 years, we’re quick to find out that you can’t please everybody all the time but Mary J. Blige is a very exciting and talented individual that we can’t wait to host on Derby day”.
