[According to the Daily News] The Sunrise, Fla., product’s soulful rendition of Beyonce‘s ballad “Listen,” which she also sang at her audition, may have put her over the top in Wednesday’s final performance round.

When asked why Melanie lasted longer than favorites Rachel Crow and Drew Ryniewicz her mentor Simon Cowell said the following to Entertainment Weekly:

She’s got that star ability, and she’s tough. She was not the easiest person to work with. If she didn’t like something, she’d tell you. But I like that. I like that from an artists. You know, she’s got guts. She’s got steel. And right up until the last second, she was always concerned about her performance, and then the light switch went on every time.
