Author James Patterson made detective Alex Cross a household name via books including “London Bridge,” “Roses Are Red” and “Big Bad Wolf.” Detective Cross has also been played by Oscar-nominee Morgan Freeman in the big screen adaptations of “Kiss The Girls” and “Along Came a Spider.” Now the torch is being passed to the multifaceted Tyler Perry. Perry will play Cross in the motion picture “I, Alex Cross.”
Critics and Alex Cross devotees have been skeptical of Perry’s ability to play the intellectually riveting character. However, co-star and director Ed Burns defends his casting. Burns had this to say to ComingSoon.net:
There are things that will shock people, mostly though Tyler Perry’s performance. The guy is so good in this movie and so powerful that I think people are going to be really shocked. He came and delivered. He’s a big dude, a smart guy. He’s a very powerful presence both physically and intellectually, so I think people are going to be very surprised.
“I, Alex Cross” will premiere in fall 2012.
So far Spike Lee and Touré have not weighed in on Tyler Perry’s new role.
